Giovanni Sgambati: Piano Works
This release restores the intimate countenance of Giovanni Sgambati, the patient architect of Roman instrumental renewal in an Italy still governed by the theatre. Between Pièces lyriques, Nocturnes, Mlodies potiques and the Mlodie de Gluck, the miniature becomes a workshop of proportion, European memory and keyboard poetry. The programme shows how the legacy of Liszt and Schumann, Italian cantabile and a closely governed formal discipline coexist within one and the same language. What emerges is a portrait of rare refinement, in which the nineteenth-century salon opens onto a cultured, cosmopolitan and profoundly Roman vision of instrumental modernity.
