Souza, Carmen
Port'ingles
"Port'Ingles" (English harbour) brings together musical tales about the special culture of the Cape Verdean islands and their inhabitants. Carmen Souza takes on these untold stories about the British past in Cape Verde and the long struggle for decolonisation in her very own style. Using jazz as a language and expression of freedom for all cultures, the singer moves to traditional rhythms such as funana, contradana, morna and mazurka. Together with her musical partner Theo Pascal, Carmen Souza has been honing an unmistakable sound for more than two decades. Strongly influenced by jazz, the result is a Creole musical language with a pronounced Lusophone/ Cape Verdean DNA.
