Aznavour, Charles
Ce Sacre Piano
There is perhaps no French artist to whom the term "global star" applies more fittingly than Charles Aznavour. He has now died at the age of 94. For more than half a century, Charles Aznavour was one of the greats of show business. In the mid-1940s, he was discovered by Edith Piaf, who took him on her tours. After several productions with pianist Pierre Roche, Charles Aznavour began his solo career, initially writing songs together with Gilbert Bécaud, who set his lyrics to music. He experienced his breakthrough in 1956 with his premiere at the Olympia in Paris. In the same year, he had his first major recording success with "Sur ma vie." Over the course of his extraordinary career, he wrote over a thousand songs, most of which deal with love. His expressive voice enchanted audiences not only in his native France. He also recorded many of his chansons in Portuguese, Spanish, English, Italian, and German.
