Bernhard Henrik Crusell: Progressive Duets For Two Clarinets, Op. 6
Published in 1821, the Three Progressive Duets for Two Clarinets op. 6 epitomise the art of Bernhard Henrik Crusell, virtuoso and composer poised between Classicism and the Romantic age. Their declared progression chiefly concerns difficulties specific to historical clarinets, now softened by advances in keywork yet still legible within the writing. Elegance, brilliance and recurrent syncopation unify a cycle shaped by the German fast-slow-fast model. In the Duet No. 2 in D minor, echoes of French opera meet the Nordic folklore of the Rondo alla svedese/ the third duet broadens the music's energy and popular character. The collection thus discloses a chamber language in which formal discipline, theatrical song and the memory of dance find an equilibrium of rare naturalness and grace.
