George Enescu: Piano Trios Nos. 1 & 2
George Enescu's only two piano trios trace an arc from his Parisian apprenticeship to full maturity. Composed in 1897, the Piano Trio No. 1 in G minor receives Brahms's inheritance within a firm design animated by continuous development, rhythmic impetus and elegiac spaces. The Piano Trio No. 2 in A minor, begun in 1916, survived instead in an incomplete, approximate autograph, remaining unpublished until Hilda Jerea's transcription and Pascal Bentoiu's later reconstruction. The edition used here introduces further dynamic indications into the text. Far removed from formulaic folklorism, both works reveal Enescu's international dimension. A chamber civilisation in which song, variation and the memory of classical form open onto a mobile, amiable and profoundly European lyricism.
