Maximiliano Amici: To The Fleeting Water Say - 35 Musical Hexagrams Ag
In To the Fleeting Water Say, Maximiliano Amici translates thirty-five hexagrams of the I Ching into musical organisms for violin, cello, flute, clarinet, piano and percussion. The book is approached as a source of wisdom and reflection upon change, not as a divinatory device: chance plays no part in composition. Broken and unbroken lines appear as streams of sound of differing duration, while each trigram generates nuclei of pitches and rhythms. The first eight pieces, based on the doubling of a single trigram, present the seeds of the cycle/ the others combine those materials according to hexagram structure. Between Confucius and the final line of Rilke's Sonnets to Orpheus, this innovative project offers a sonic cosmology of becoming, rigorous in construction and poetic in image.
