Erwin Schulhoff: A Lone Voice
In early 20th-century Europe, Erwin Schulhoff emerged as a lone voice who absorbed disparate influences - from late Romanticism to Dada - to forge a unique musical language. The album "A Lone Voice," performed by Quartetto Eridàno, unites his two string quartets (1924-25) with two related works: the youthful Divertimento for string quartet (1914) and the Five Pieces (1923), a suite of wry, stylized dances. These works chart Schulhoffs journey from an early style still rooted in late Romanticism to the daring rhythmic experiments and grotesque irony of his maturity, each revealing the originality of his musical vision.
