Schumann: Piano Works (davidsbndlertnze, Arabeske, Humoreske, Waldsze)
This double album maps Schumanns pianistic imagination from the fever of the 1830s to the lucid concentration of maturity. In the Davidsbrtnze op. 6 heard in the second version of 1850, Florestan and Eusebius turn dance into autobiography beneath the sign of Clara and the League of David. The Arabeske op. 18 folds longing within an ornamental line of classical poise/ the Humoreske op. 20 expands Romantic Humor into a mobile organism crowned by the silent innere Stimme, a written, unheard thought. In the Waldszenen op. 82 the forest becomes refuge and memory. The piano is thus transformed into an inward book, a theatre of fragments, landscapes and living recollection, where literature and sound converge in one of Romanticisms most elevated forms of poetic truth.
