Sami music has its roots deep in traditional joik, while the big band ensemble dates back to the 1930s in the United States. The cornerstones of the big band tradition are rhythm and jazz music, as well as the seamless ensemble playing of the wind sections and rhythm section. The most important musical instrument in Sami music is the human voice. Improvisation plays an important role in both traditions.
