Mr. Bomb Skwad
Candyland
r. Bomb Skwad proves success in the production of a fantastically diverse "Candyland". Within this singular album, elements of acid techno, electro, pop, all framed in an EDM framework result in something quite ambitious. Surprisingly freewheeling and limber, Mr. Bomb Skwad shifts gears remarkably quickly throughout the whole of the album. A dense sound works wonders too for it is easy to surrender to the vast walls of sound. Texturally the way the songs build upon their grooves is outright masterful while the energy never lets up. Every piece perfectly plays upon the last in a way that is uniquely satisfying. Gentle playful melodies grace the cinematic opener "Skwad's Bells". Elements of a sugar-rush meets hip-hop transforms "Summit Lights" into a bright brilliant blur. Rolling through with a force of nature bass line the infectious "The Spirit of New Years Eve" gets a fantastically sweet groove. Delicate keys dance about on the contemplative stance of "Snowy Christmas". By far the highlight comes from the orchestral title track "Candyland" which features an origami like series of potent patterns. Virtually racing through "Lost in Noel" goes for an almost unhindered rave up, with the kinetic energy feeling particularly welcoming. Going for something slightly more reflective is the pensive take of "Mr. Eve". Minimal house vibes bring the album to a close on the spacious finale "The Night". "Candyland" shows off tremendous bursts of energy morphed into big beautiful hooks, the kind that linger in the mind long after the album has ended.
