Robert Schumann: Complete Piano Sonatas
This survey of Schumanns Sonatas illuminates the creative workshop of the 1830s, where form, fragment and autobiography become inseparable. Alongside the Sonatas op. 11 and op. 14, the programme presents the Sonata op. 22 both in its published form and in the 1830-35 version, including the Presto passionato originally intended as its conclusion, as well as the unfinished first Finale of op. 14 and the surviving fragments of Sonata No. 4 Anh. F28. The Fantasie op. 17 crowns the journey as an alternative monument to Beethoven and a confession addressed to Clara Wieck. The result is a recording project of exceptional documentary importance, revealing Schumann in the act of composition through revisions, quotations, thematic metamorphoses and a modernity nourished by Witz, depth and distance.
