Chopin, Scriabin: Inward Journeys
Inward Journeys places Chopin and Scriabin in dialogue through the miniature, a realm of Romantic subjectivity. Chopin's Mazurkas op. 30, Nocturnes op. 32 and op. 55, and waltzes transform dance, song and exile into a language in which each return bears a new harmonic shadow. Among them is the Waltz in A minor attributed to Chopin, discovered in 2024 at the Morgan Library & Museum, presented here in one of its earliest recordings. In the Nocturnes op. 5, Impromptus à la mazur op. 7, Preludes op. 27 and Poems op. 32, Scriabin inherits that lexicon while dissolving tonal function from within, suspending resolution in ecstatic expectancy. The album thus reveals the short form not as a lesser genre, but as a site of daring linguistic transformation and concentrated inward life.
