Sergio Assad: Naoussa Concerto & Concerto Do Rio
This Da Vinci Classics album features two works for guitar and Symphony Orchestra, both in world premiere, by Sergio Assad, i.e. his Naoussa Concerto and Concerto do Rio, both performed by soloist Thanos Mitsalas supported by the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra conducted by Miltos Logiadis. These pieces, through their descriptive movement and section titles, paint a. compelling picture of contrasting culturale nvironments: one an urban Brazilian setting, the other a rural Greek one. The Naoussa Concerto premiered in the northern Greek town of Naoussa. The performance commemorated the 200th anniversary of a tragic event in the towns history -the 1822 massacre during the Greek War of Independence. Brazilian-born guitarist, composer, and arranger Sergio Assad is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking contributions to the classical guitar. A student of Monina Tavora, a protg of Andrs Segovia, Assad studied composition and conducting at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro.
