Mcgee, Kirsty -& The Hobopop Collective-

Those Old Demons

Beatnik by nature, the literate, even filmic, style of Kirsty McGee's output draws on auteurs like Jim Jarmusch and the Coen Brothers; combining humour and dry observation with a grainy old-time black-and-white feel, a smoky jazz bar voice and a deep sense of humanity. Formed in 2007, The Hobopop Collective is McGee's ever-changing bunch of leftfield misfits and ragged visionaries taken from diverse musical backgrounds and raised by extremely gentle wolves. With playing credits ranging from Alison Krauss, Elvis Costello & Tom Waits to Aim and Richard Hawley, the band is unified by a sense of joyous mischief and a compassionate and fair-minded attitude to all genres of music & ways of creating sound. The Collective on this record includes the legendary Marc Ribot (Waits, Costello) The sound is joyful and dirty with hints of gospel and blues, sometimes veering towards jazz, cubist shuffle and wry noir. From musical saw and waterphone to Humber hubcaps and metal buckets, the Collective is a gentle anarchist in a bikini and steel toed boots singing defiant lovesongs through a loudhailer. A prolific and original writer & touring artist, McGee is perhaps best known for her song Sandman which was featured in Danny Boyle's 2013 thriller Trance.
