Johannes Brahms: Piano Quartet No. 2 Op. 26

Written by Brahms in his late teens, this Second Piano Quartet follows the First closely, and accomplishes the formal and expressive experiments found there. This gigantic masterpiece, lasting more than most Symphonies, supports its huge architecture thanks to its deep formal innovations, reinterpreting creatively the structures of tradition. Brahms premiered it at the piano, in the Great Hall of the Musikverein, bearing witness to a novel concept of chamber music, leaving the narrow boundaries of private music-making for the concert hall.
