Between Charles the Bold and Charles V, vielles and rebecs gradually gave way to viols and violins. The earliest evidence of this transition appears between the Republic of Venice (which included Brescia and Bergamo) and the Duchies of Milan and Savoy. It is in the archives of the latter that the term "vyollons" is mentioned for the first time in 1523.
