Writing Guitar Sonatas in the 20th century means taking a clear stance: in reaffirming the importance of a genre and form which many considered as pass, and in claiming for the guitar the status of an instrument suited to both timbral and formal experimentation. Such was the case with Alberto Ginastera, who waited forty years before tackling the guitar and its distinctive features. This is also the case with the Serbian-American Dusan Bogdanovic, who blends such diverse styles as ancient counterpoint and Renaissance improvisation techniques with jazz and ethnic music. And with Mikls Rzsa, a celebrated composer of film music, who understand experimentalism in connection with tradition.
