Franz Schubert: Latest Piano Works
The programme joins two culminating achievements of Schubert's late piano writing: the Piano Sonata No. 21 in B-flat major D. 960 and the Drei Klavierstucke D. 946. In the Sonata, classical form expands into metaphysical landscape: song advances through returns, thresholds and sudden tonal distances, while time seems released from the urgency of development. The three pieces gather the same spiritual substance within shorter, more irregular designs, crossed by dynamic fractures, lyrical memories and restless dance impulses. Published posthumously with Brahms playing a decisive role in their transmission, they illuminate Schubert's final workshop. The piano becomes a wordless voice, an implicit quartet and a visionary space, transforming duration into destiny and return into knowledge.
