Mario Castelnuovo-tedesco: 24 Caprichos De Goya, Op 195

Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, one of the greatest Italian composers of the twentieth century, was deeply fascinated by things Spanish also because his familys origins were Iberian. He wrote extensively for the guitar, and he actively cooperated with Andrs Segovia, for whom the series of 24 Caprichos de Goya op. 195 was conceived. Castelnuovo-Tedesco created the musical equivalent to Francisco Goyas iconic and heavily satirical etchings, possibly incorporating irony and satire, as well as autobiographical references, into his music. This work, among the last ones written by Castelnuovo-Tedesco for the guitar, is juxtaposed to his 3 Preludi al Circeo op. 194, a trilogy inspired by three episodes from Homers Odyssey - in particular, from Ulysses and his companions adventures at the Cave of Circe, the enchantress. These works, taken together, represent a fascinating insight into Castelnuovo-Tedescos late, and most mature, style.
