The traveller, composer and 'English nobleman' Charles Burney has remained in history for his books on 18th century European musical life, an essential source for anyone interested in that period. But not only that! Burney was also a composer and teacher, and proof of this are his collections of sonatas presented in their first recording on this double CD. The two sets of 4-hand Sonatas for harpsichord stand (according to Burney himself) among the very first examples of four-hand literature on a keyboard instrument. Together with his solo sonatas, two examples of which are also presented on these discs, they are truly unique and very fascinating examples of the English composer's polymorphous and cosmopolitan musical taste.
