Suur Toll

Suur Toll is a symphonic poem (a single continuous piece of music which evokes a non-musical source such as a painting, landscape, novel or poem) evoking the life and times of an ice breaker of the same name. During the course of the 46 minutes and 46 seconds of the piece, Wickman creates a series of interlinked and overlapping variations that explore strands of the history of the ship from its birth in the shipyards of Stettin for the Imperial Russian government, through its working life sailing under the Russian, Bolshevik, Finnish, Estonian and Soviet flags - a history that takes in both World Wars and the shift from coal to oil power.
