Subs
You Are You
At the center of Chinas burgeoning rock scene is Beijing, and in the middle of the capitals underground is Subs, a 100% DIY punk unit with a cult domestic following. Subs vocalist Kang Mao and guitarist Wu Hao met in 1997 while at university in the central Chinese industrial city of Wuhan, where they were both deeply involved in the then-burgeoning punk rock scene (Wu playing guitar in hardcore band Shit Dog, Kang running unlicensed DIY punk venue Boys Toys). The two moved to Chinas underground music mecca, Beijing, in 2001, starting Subs the next year. Since forming, Subs has become one of Chinas most established and popular underground rock bands, cementing their position at the top of the heap with the jagged-edged garage punk rippers of their debut LP, Down (2006). Throughout their career, Subs has by choice remained the only band of its stature in China to maintain complete independence, booking all of their shows (including domestic and European tours) and releasing all of their records without a middleman despite having no alternate source of income. Undergoing several lineup changes over the years, in 2014 Subs stripped down to a three-piece, with Texas native Josh Feola (ex-Chui Wan, Mind Eraser) stepping behind the drums. They self-released their latest full-length, You Are You, in March 2014, shedding a bit of their overdriven punk edge to experiment with new wave, post-punk, psych and electronic influences that have seeped in over the years. Sudden Death is proud to make this work widely available to listeners the world over..
