Burn Burn Gypsy Love
"Burn Burn Gypsy Love!" is JELENA fi rst CD featuring the Russian Gypsy tradition. JELENA JAKUBOVITCH was born in Moscow but currently lives in Stockholm. For many years her repertoire featured mainly Russian poetry set to music - mostly by herself. She sings poems by the great Russian 20th century poets Anna Akhmatova, Boris Pasternak, Osip Mandelstam, and Marina Tsvetayeva, and by modern poets like Bulat Okudzhava. During the last years Jelena has switched to Russian Gypsy music, a repertoire she has always had a weakness for. When Dmitri Shostakovitch heard Jelena - a young girl at the time - sing Gypsy romances, he was struck by "the sensibility of interpretation, the depth and control of the voice, all combined with an extraordinary musicality - in short, those rare and indisputable qualities that make a great artist".
