Hughes, Rhetta
Re-light My Fire
Dallas-born soul singer Rhetta Hughes began her career in a lounge act with pianist Tennyson Stephens; a move to Chicago led to a debut LP for Columbia. In 1968 she was discovered by Bill Cosby, who signed her to his Tetragrammaton label; debut single 'You're Doing It With Her' nearly cracked the R&B top 40, the breakthrough coming in a one-off psychedelic soul recasting of the Doors' 'Light My Fire.' Both singles appeared on Re-Light My Fire, a rarity that changes hands for top dollars, and the rest of the album is just as good, Mike Terry's tasteful arrangements drawing out the best of Hughes' abilities. A great listen for soul fans!
