Guachinangos
Guanchinangos, Vol. 1
At the forefront of the son jarocho renaissance, New York City's Guachinangos make their recorded debut. The group offers folk fusion from another dimension, blending traditional Veracruz, Mexico son jarocho with Colombian styles like cumbia and champeta, all carried by an irresistible swing. A mix of traditional and electric instrumentation fuels particularly sweaty, vital concerts that feel equal parts dance party and community gathering. Founding members Juan Carlos Marin, a master requinto player, and Gabriella Grimaldi, on fiddle, are joined by bandmates contributing vocal harmonies, jarana, drums, bass, zapateado, electric guitar, tambor alegre, quijada, tambora, maracas, and piano. These vibrant recordings feature a mix of traditional material and recently composed pieces, all written or arranged in New York City. RIYL: Radio Jarocho, Las Cafeteras, Mono Blanco.
