Garrick, Michael -sextet-

Black Marigolds

Michael Garrick's Black Marigolds is widely regarded as one of the landmark recordings of 1960s British jazz. The album is performed by some of the finest jazz musicians in Britain during the 1960s, including Ian Carr, Joe Harriott, Don Rendell, and Tony Coe. Michael Garrick alternates between piano, harpsichord, and celeste, creating an unusually rich palette of sounds. Indeed, the album is characterized not only by post-bop improvisation, chamber-jazz textures and poetic storytelling, but also unusual instrumentation and sounds which recall middle-age and middle Eastern music. Today the album is widely admired for its originality and refusal to fit neatly into conventional jazz categories. This new edition on vinyl is the first ever since its release in 1966.
