Berta, John Winston

Right To Wonder

John is a musician, songwriter, producer, ... Packed with a love of rhythm, John started playing the bongos at the age of 1 and was constantly searching for new musical worlds. At the age of 5 he started recording cassette tapes with improvised drums and singing performances. He has appeared on stage with Jamie Cullum, Chester Thompson and Benny Brown. In addition to his band "Hagelslag", with which he opened for the "Fantastischen Vier", he plays in various fixed and improvised formations. Hagelslag is a 9-piece jazz band, with John on vocals and drums, who are stirring up the scene. Their sound is fresh and funky, enriched with a little soul and rap. In their meanwhile 15 D-Room sessions, which can be seen on YouTube, they play with other great musicians and make very professionally produced live videos of them. With lines like "Once you're coming out of these four walls / Meet a self of yours / That's been hiding behind the doors" from the song "The Key", he reveals his own closeness, which he overcomes in his music. With his debut album "Right To Wonder", John's first solo record is finally out, on which he not only wrote all the songs himself, but also recorded the instruments (with the exception of keys: Lennart Smidt). Jurik Maretzki, producer of the band "Liedfett", supported him with the studio work. The mastering was done by Marc Einstmann, who already worked for Mick Jagger, Depeche Mode and The Neptunes. John's lyrics come from the moment. He captures a feeling or a mood that touches him personally and yet speaks a universal language. He talks about pulling oneself up, the urge to experience and to be, about the pitfalls of love, rejection and the longing for real relationships.
