32 - HOOKER, JOHN LEE - BURNING HELL - (LP)
RUMBLE

Blues legend John Lee Hooker cut countless records beginning with his debut for Modern in 1948 and going some 50+ years until his death in 2001. With such a vast discography it can be easy to lose track of some records and Burning Hell, recorded in Detroit in 1959 with just his guitar and vocals, is one such lost record. But this album deserves so much to be rediscovered, a brilliant set from his "acoustic" period this is raw southern acoustic blues at its best and a truly brilliant collection of songs. Rumble is pleased to bring this lost classic back to light on LP.

34 - KING, B.B. - THE BLUES - (LP)
RUMBLE

Originally released in 1958, on the legendary budget label Crown, The Blues compiles many of the classic 50s sides that B.B. King recorded for the Los Angeles based labels RPM, Kent, and Modern. Mostly recorded in Kings home base of Memphis, TN - some of which were even recorded and produced by Sam Phillips of Sun Records fame - these twelve sides are some of the most important and classic blues and R&B tracks of the 1950s. A true workhorse, King was often playing more than 300 concerts a year at this point in his career, and it shows in these performances where a tight band is led by one of the most practiced and technically skilled guitarists of the era. King remains a huge influence on guitarists to this day and these recordings, from nearly 60 years ago, are a perfect example why.

37 - MARTHA & THE VANDELLAS - HEAT WAVE - (LP)
RUMBLE

Born in Eufaula, Alabama, in 1941, the 3rd of 11 children, Martha Reeves moved with her family to the Motor City - Detroit, Michigan - when she was less than a year old. Like so many other R&B and soul singers of the era, she was raised on gospel and started singing in the church, but before long the secular interests of doo-wop and R&B won out and by the age of 18 she had joined her first vocal group, The Fascinations. In 1960 she joined the group that would eventually become Martha & The Vandellas (named after Marthas childhood street, Van Dyke, and her singing idol, Della Reese). After filling in on backup vocals for Marvin Gayes classic "Stubborn Kind Of Fellow", the group signed their own recording contract with Motowns Gordy label. By the following year, they were having massive chart success with this albums title track, "Heat Wave", and "Quicksand" (both of which were written by the new songwriting trio of Holland-Dozier-Holland). Compiling many of those early hit singles in 1963, Heat Wave is a quintessential piece of the Motown Sound that every record collection needs.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Heatwave 02. Then He Kissed Me 03. Hey There Lonely Boy 04. More 05. Danke Schoen 06. If I Had A Hammer 07. Hello Stranger 08. Just One Look 09. Wait Till My Bobby Gets Home 10. My Boyfriend's Back 11. Mockingbird 12. Quicksand

Featuring songs from such legendary American songwriters as Hoagy Carmichael and Irving Berlin, Marilyn may not have been the most classically trained vocalist in history but the voice is undeniably recognizable and an American icon and damn did she look good doing it. Born Ezekiel Christopher Montanez, Montez was so popular in the UK that he had The Beatles opening for HIM on tour. 41 - PRICE, LLOYD - MR. PERSONALITY - (LP)
RUMBLE

New Orleans native Lloyd Price first found success in the early '50s on Specialty Records. After several hit records, his career was interrupted by the draft, which sent him off to Korea in 1954. When he returned from the war, he found that, not only had he been replaced in his own band by none other than Little Richard, his former driver, Larry Williams was now cutting records for Specialty himself. Undeterred, Lloyd began recording again almost immediately. His sound by the late 50s had morphed into a perfect blend of pop and New Orleans R&B, a sound that brought him to a wider audience as the classic 'Personality' hit #2 on the charts, and 'I'm Gonna Get Married' reached #3. Those two classics are included here along with 10 more great pieces of pop-tinged Rhythm and Blues.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Personality 02. Mary Anne 03. Time After Time 04. Have You Ever Had The Blues 05. Yakety-yak--bing Bang 06. I Only Have Eyes For You 07. I'm Gonna Get Married 08. Dinner For One 09. Is It Really Love? 10. Poppa-shun 11. All Of Me 12. I Want You To Know

42 - PRYSOCK, RED - ROCK'N'ROLL - (LP)
RUMBLE

Wilburt "Red" Prysock was one of the first American tenor saxophonists to take the influence of Jazz masters such as Coleman Hawkins in a distinctly R&B direction. The brother of R&B singer, Arthur Prysock, with whom he played on numerous sessions, Red is probably best known for the 1955 hit "Hand Clappin" which is included on this LP. A classic groovin R&B instrumental with honking sax work from Red, the track is universally beloved by swingers, greasers, and anybody with a hankering to dance. But "Hand Clappin" is not the only thing to love here on RockNRoll, theres 11 more classics to jump and jive to; Zoot suit and pork pie hat not included.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Jump, Red, Jump 02. Happy Feet 03. Blow Your Horn 04. Little Jamie 05. Zonked 06. Rock 'n Roll 07. Zip 08. Fats Place 09. Alright, Okay, You Win 10. That's The Groovy Thing 11. Jumbo 12. Hand Clappin'

43 - RUSH, OTIS - COBRA - (LP)
RUMBLE

The great Chicago bluesman Willie Dixon knew raw talent when he saw it, and he saw it in the 20-year-old southpaw guitarist from Mississippi, Otis Rush. Thanks to Dixon, Rush was soon cutting singles for the Chicago-based Cobra Records, and in 1956 his first single, "I Cant Quit You Baby", shot to number 6 on the R&B charts. Over the next two years Rush released a total of eight singles for Cobra (all produced by Dixon), including masterpieces like "Double Trouble" (featuring Ike Turner on guitar), "Keep On Loving Me Baby" and "All Your Love (I Miss Loving)", inventing Chicagos West Side blues style (along with Magic Sam and Buddy Guy) along the way. These eight singles, collected here, represent one of the most outstanding moments in Chicago blues.

48 - WASHINGTON, BABY - THAT'S HOW HEARTACHES ARE MADE - (LP)
RUMBLE

Justine "Baby" Washingtons 1963 soul classic "Thats How Heartaches Are Made" was the Harlem raised singers first and only chart entry in the Billboard Top 40, and her finest moment. A delectable slice of uptown soul, the title track stands as one of the greatest R&B hits of the early 60s. The rest of the album is no slouch, however, as its rounded out by 11 more tasty nuggets of sweet femme soul, most notably the Spector-inflected "Leave Me Alone" and the organ-driven groover "A Handful Of Memories". 49 - WELLS, MARY - BYE BYE BABY - (LP)
RUMBLE

Released in August 1961, Mary Wells debut album was the very first LP on the legendary Motown label. To hear Mary Wells rich-throated belting of the lyrics on "Bye Bye Baby" is a reminder of the even greater artistic career that might have been had Motown mogul Barry Gordy and producer Smokey Robinson not opted to soften and commercialize Wells sound. The raw power in Wells voice is evident much more so than on her later and better-known hits. While the song is entirely secular and romantic in its R&B riffs, Wells gospel choir training is amply evident. Its more reminiscent of the type of recordings for which Aretha Franklin would later become known than of the smooth pop sound prominent on most of Wells other hits. Not only an incredibly underrated R&B album, filled with a quantity of killer dancefloor-fillers, but an important insight into an artist and her record company both taking their first steps toward what would be the eventual enduring legacy of each.??

TRACKLISTING: 01. Come To Me 02. I Don't Want To Take A Chance 03. Bye Bye Baby 04. Shop Around 05. I Love The Way You Love 06. I'm Gonna Stay 07. Let The Conscience Be Your Guide 08. Bad Boy 09. I'm So Sorry 10. Please Forgive Me

51 - WILLIS, CHUCK - KING OF THE STROLL - (LP)
RUMBLE

Though well known to his fans as the "Sheik of the Blues", thanks to his gigantic private collection of colourful turbans he used on stage, by the end of 1957 the Atlanta-born Chuck Willis found himself crowned with yet another title: "The King of the Stroll". When the new dance step, The Stroll, began sweeping the US, his "Betty And Dupree" 45 had just been released, making it immediately clear that the groovy, slow tempo type of music to which the Stroll was danced went perfectly with the type of music Chuck Willis was releasing for Okeh Records, such as his irresistible update of "C.C. Rider", a classic folk blues performed by Ma Rainey in Atlanta before Willis was even born, along with a plethora of R&B top sellers. These Okeh singles were later collected by Atlantic on this 1958 LP, The King Of The Stroll.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Betty And Dupree 02. That Train Is Gone 03. Love Me Cherry 04. Juanita 05. Its Too Late 06. C.c. Rider 07. My Life 08. Whatcha Gonna Do When Your Baby Leaves You 09. Kansas City Woman 10. Theres Got To Be A Way 11. Ease The Pain 12. Thunder And Lightning 13. My Crying Eyes.

52 - WILSON, JACKIE - HE'S SO FINE - (LP)
RUMBLE

Detroit native Jackie Wilson, AKA "Mr. Excitement", left jump blues and R&B group The Dominoes in 1957 to pursue a solo career. The following year he released this, his debut LP, a rollicking collection of orchestrated pop R&B of the highest caliber. Including the hit "Reet Petite", half the songs on this LP were written by Berry Gordy, Jr. nearly 2 years before he founded Motown, which was partially funded by songwriting royalties Gordy earned writing hits for Wilson. A fine debut from one of the great soul and R&B singers of the late 50s/early 60s, a man who counted among his fans and followers no less than James Brown, Michael Jackson, and the king himself, Elvis Presley.

RUMBLE

Detroit, Michigan's own Stevland Hardaway Morris - known to the world as Stevie Wonder - burst onto the scene in 1962 with this, his debut album, after being discovered by Ronnie White of The Miracles. Though it did not produce a hit, The Jazz Soul of Little Stevie showcases the immense songwriting and instrumental chops of the then 12 year old Wonder. Wonder plays keyboards, harmonica, and percussion here and the album includes the original studio version of "Fingertips", whose live version ("Fingertips Pt. 2") would become his first major national hit a year later. Own a piece of early Motown history with this glorious LP reissue of the debut LP from the legendary Stevie Wonder.

54 - WONDER, STEVIE - TRIBUTE TO UNCLE RAY - (LP)
RUMBLE

Wonder's second LP, recorded and released when he was only 12 years old, is a tribute to Ray Charles. As the original liner notes state, "Little Stevie Wonder, Tamla's 11-year-old musical genius, is blind, a similarity he shares with a famed musician and vocalist of today." Though this is perhaps not the most subtle of tribute albums and a clear cash in attempt from Motown, who were still looking for a way to market their new-found talent, the results are still fantastic. Little Stevie powers his way through a grip of Charles' classics as well as some original songs done in the "Charles style" and while the LP failed to score a hit, it's an enjoyable listen that shows a glimpse of the super star talent that was soon to emerge.

57 - WRAY, LINK -& THE WRAYMEN- - THE ORIGINAL 1958 CADENCE SESSIONS - (LP)
RUMBLE

This is the album that Link Wray originally offered to the Cadence label in the wake of his groundbreaking debut hit 'Rumble' back in 1958. Even though people loved 'em in Washington, D.C., Link and the boys did not last long on the label. Faster than you can say 'Rumble', everyone was talking about the new threat to the morals of American youth. Their street image seemed to be sharply at odds with Cadence Records formality, so the guys were dropped. Link eventually re-recorded some of the tracks for his next label, Epic, who actually released his debut album. However, these are the original Cadence versions from the original session tapes. Finally on vinyl, Link's debut album the way it was meant to be!

TRACKLISTING: 01. Oddball Aka Rumble 02. Pancho Villa 03. Walking With Link 04. Comanche 05. The Swag 06. Raw Hide 07. Dance Contest 08. School Girl 09. Heartbreak Hotel 10. Drag Race 11. Rebel Rouser 12. Patricia 13. The Freeze 14. I'll Be So Good To You 15. Window Shopping 16. Missing Link 17. White Lightnin' 18. Creepy
